Everyone acknowledges how important physical health is for overall well-being but not as much emphasis is placed on mental health. A cornerstone of good mental health is to have peace of mind. It sounds simple enough but not everyone has it or even knows how to achieve it. Externally you may have all of life's trappings at your disposal but if you are not at peace it may as well be all for naught. Conversely, the world around you could be fraught with pain, sadness, turmoil, uneasiness, tension, stress, and anxiety. But it does not have to completely consume you or affect your outlook. It is possible to remain calm and serene, even through a storm but it is not something that will happen overnight; it can take months or even years to train your mind to be able to negate the negative influences and live life with complete peace of mind.
Peace of mind is absolutely necessary for human beings; it can circumvent such things as mental stress, depression, and can even slow down the aging process among other things. When you have inner-tranquility your entire outlook on life changes; you may not readily adopt "the glass is half-full approach" to life but even if you do see it as half-empty you will realize that there are some things that are out of your control, negative things will happen, but it does not necessarily reflect negatively on you as a person.
When you react to negative influences you become victimized over and over again because something else has power over your emotions or responses. It is a luxury that few are able to achieve or able to buy because it is a purely personal journey and requires people to sometimes shut-out the noise around them and look within while focusing on their life.
Listed are a few very simple things one can do to get started on the journey to having peace of mind:
- Try, if at all possible, to stay away from negative things, influences and people.
- Learn to accept that in life there are some things that cannot be changed.
- Try not to hold grudges against someone.
- Learn to meditate by blocking out the noise and having a few peaceful moments to your own self.
- Find peace of mind and comfort in the activities you like to do; for example – prayers.
- Meet people whom you consider special and love to spend time with.
